UAE holds 7 most expensive car plates

Abu Dhabi: UAE residents hold the seven most expensive car number plates in the world.

All seven numbers - five single digit numbers and two double digit numbers in category five from Abu Dhabi Police - were sold at charity auctions.

A Hong Kong number plate 18, which was sold for Hong Kong dollar 16 million (about Dh7.54 million) is the eighth most expensive one following Abu Dhabi numbers.

Car number plate 9, sold for Dh15.4 million on Saturday evening, was the latest from the Abu Dhabi Police to enter the most expensive car plate club.

It became the third most expensive number plate in the world by pushing back plate no. 6, which was sold for Dh15.3 million last month to fourth position, a senior official told Gulf News.

An Emirati businessman in Abu Dhabi, who did not want to be named, purchased number plate 9, said Lt. Col. Abdul Rahman M. Ali Al Kamali, Director of Administration of Privatisation and Financial Investments, Ministry of Interior.

"Last two auctions proved that our people are genuinely interested in charity," he said.
