Dubai: The UAE has a low percentage of violence against children, with a police official saying there were just a few individual cases to talk of.

Lieutenant Colonel Dr Mohammad Al Murr, Director of Dubai Police's Human Rights Care Department, said they had dealt with a handful of cases of violence against children and the suspects had been hauled before the justice system and sentenced accordingly.

"Violence against children here is relatively low compared to other parts of the world and the cases that happened were individual," he said.

Lieutenant Colonel Dr Al Murr was talking during a press conference to announce a seminar that will take place on Wednesday December 17.

The seminar will be part of Dubai Police's celebrations of 60 years achieved after the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which guarantees and protects all forms of human rights.

The seminar will focus on child rights under the theme "toward social awareness of child rights".
