Two youngsters die in head-on car collision

Police say one of the vehicles was moving against traffic on Emirates Road

Ras Al Khaimah: Two Emirati drivers were killed in a head-on car collision on Emirates Road, Exit 119, in Ras Al Khaimah on Saturday afternoon, Colonel Abdullah Ali Munkis, Director of Traffic and Patrol in Ras Al Khaimah Police told Gulf News.

Colonel Al Munkis said the 32-year-old Emirati identified as M.A.A. was speeding and driving in the opposite direction of the traffic before running into another vehicle as he lost control over his car.

The 23-year-old Emirati identified as J.M.B., who was driving his car on the proper side of traffic flow, was not able to manoeuvre against M.A.A.'s speeding car resulting in the collision.

Both the cars were completely destroyed.

M.A.A was killed on the spot while J.M.B was transferred to Saqr Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Colonel Al Munkis said.

Colonel Al Munkis said: "The accident was a result of speeding as the young Emirati who caused the accident was driving at 160 km/h in his 4x4 Lexus, which he lost control of leading to the collision."

Investigations

Police patrol, paramedics and ambulance rushed to the scene as soon as Ras Al Khaimah operation room was informed about the accident at around 11:30 am.

Colonel Al Munkis was also at the accident site to investigate the cause of the collision.

The bodies were handed over to their families for burial.

Colonel Al Munkis said investigations are still ongoing. He urged motorists to respect speed limits and avoid using and driving against the flow of traffic on the roads which can lead to fatal accidents. Police rescue teams had to cut open the cars to remove the bodies of the drivers.

Meanwhile, four people sustained moderate to severe injuries after their vehicle crashed into a palm tree yesterday morning.

The accident took place along Al Sharq Road in Al Jazeera area, according to Sharjah Police.

A police official said police patrols were immediately deployed to the scene to rescue the injured, who were then transferred to Kuwaiti Hospital.

Two of the injured did not possess identification documents, while the other two passengers were from the Comoros Island.

According to the police, the accident was caused by reckless driving and the passenger seats had to be cut open.

Authorities have time and again launched road safety awareness campaigns to target drivers with bad driving practices and to remind them to drive safely and responsibly on the road.
