New radar guns to catch speedsters in Dubai from next year

Dubai: Dubai Police will soon start using new digital radars, called radar guns, to catch speeding vehicles.

Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said the radar gun will catch speeding vehicles - both light and heavy - on highways.

The radar can record the offence digitally on video and is easy to carry, given its light weight.

"The new radar gun will become operational during the first quarter of next year [and will be used] to catch offenders, reduce speeding offences and thereby reduce fatal accidents," he said.

Police are already in the process of commissioning 50 such radars. More than 230 people have been killed in traffic accidents in Dubai so far this year.

It is not radars that Dubai needs to reduce the number of speeding cars but more undercover police cars, especially to spot reckless drivers. Irresponsible drivers and not just speedsters are the ones causing the devastating accidents!

It is dangerous driving and not necessarily speeding that causes accidents. Speeding on empty roads is less dangerous than driving carelessly on busy roads. Yet more cameras continue to be installed. I hope the authorities find a way to catch dangerous drivers instead of investing more on radar cameras?

I would like to congratulate Dubai Police on placing this technology, although it is a bit late. We all have families either in the UAE or back home. Police should fine and ban speeding cars and careless motorists. Additionally, they should design a reward program for people who report bad drivers.

Traffic enforcers should be on the roads as undercover cops because radars can be easily manipulated. The authorities should not rely on static gadgets alone. They should think ahead of reckless drivers. Every week we go to Abu Dhabi and I see many drivers, including bus drivers, overtaking us while we drive at 120 kilometres per hour.

I think Dubai Police should start this project as early as possible rather than wait till next year, as there are some people who drive on highways as if they were racetracks. This is especially the case on the newly opened Al Khail Road towards Business Bay.
