New bridge on Al Khail Road 'another death trap'

Dubai: A recently opened bridge on Al Khail Road has left motorists confused and fuming by creating another bottleneck on this busy highway.

The bridge was opened last month on part of Al Khail Road behind Business Bay on the way to Abu Dhabi. Motorists say the bridge is another death trap where an accident is waiting to happen.

At least seven lanes from three directions merge into four lanes right at the beginning of the bridge, leading to traffic jams.

Three lanes lead to the bridge on Al Khail Road from Emirates Road, two more lanes from Business Bay Bridge and Oud Metha Road and another two lanes from Doha Street.

What troubles motorists most is the sudden need to pick the right lane for the right route in the direction of Al Wasl and Nad Al Sheba, to Al Quoz and to Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi. They have to do this on a short 200 metre stretch of the bridge.

"You can see lots of brake marks on the bridge," said motorist Mohammad Osama. Another motorist said getting into a lane is very difficult because of long queues of trucks.

Officials at the Traffic and Roads Agency at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority did not comment on the issue.
