Dubai sees steep increase in pedestrian deaths, says traffic department

Dubai: There has been a 118 per cent increase in the number of pedestrian deaths over the past six years.

According to the statistics from the Dubai Police's Traffic Department, around 338 pedestrians have been killed in accidents from 2000 to 2005.

Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said that 2005 saw the highest number of pedestrian deaths.

There were 505 accidents involving pedestrians in which 98 were killed.

The year 2000 saw the lowest number of pedestrian deaths with 45 killed in 322 accidents.

Brigadier Al Zafein said that all parties involved in a run over accident are responsible for the incident, especiallly the motorist.
