Abu Dhabi: A driving instructor is in police custody after a crash that injured a mother and two young children, Gulf News has learnt.
The incident happened last Monday on Airport Road outside Carrefour, police said.
The family parked their car and was walking by when the driving instructor reportedly reversed his vehicle, knocking down the mother and the children.
According to a family friend who did not want to be named, the driver reversed his car carelessly and at high speed.
The father was in front of the vehicle and not involved in the accident, he said.
The children, aged four and six, suffered fractured hands and other minor injuries.
"The mother was injured more seriously. She fell under the car and was dragged for few metres before the car came to a halt, resulting in deep wounds," the family friend said.
Rescue efforts
The ambulance and rescue team had difficulty freeing the mother from under the car, the informant said.
Doctors said she would need metal implants to fix her broken bones and would also need skin grafts.
The driving instructor, described as an Asian national, was detained by Abu Dhabi police at the scene. A rescue official said that the three victims were moved to the Shaikh Khalifa Medical City.
