Dubai: The new Business Bay Bridge will be fully operational on May 1, said a senior official.

"All 13 lanes of the bridge will be opened on May 1," said Engineer Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), after inspecting the bridge site yesterday.

He along with other senior officials also visited the new under-construction Al Garhoud Bridge and the Floating Bridge to inspect the construction work.

Six out of the 13 lanes of the bridge were opened in March. Business Bay Bridge is the third bridge over the Dubai Creek and has been built after 30 years of the existing Al Maktoum and Al Garhoud Bridges.

The Business Bay Bridge is located some 1.5 kilometres South of the Al Garhoud Bridge near the Festival City and provides a new road corridor to motorists travelling between Bur Dubai and Deira and to Sharjah, in addition to Emirates Road and Shaikh Zayed Road.

This bridge is brilliant. My travel time from Gusais to my office in Oud Metha has been reduced dramatically from 45 minutes to just 20!

Hats off to RTA. Nowadays, I reach my office on time because of the Business Bay bridge.

I was on SZR last evening on my way to DNATA, found the new ITS display board "Maktoum and Garhoud road congested, take Business Bay Crossing". I managed to cross the creek easily but end up in Qusais and had to come back all the way. This may be because I am not familiar with the new roads in the DFC area but no wonder not many people use the Business Bay crossing ? it is such a long way from downtown Dubai.

The bridge has considerably reduced trafic on the Khail and Emirates Road but now the problem has shifted to the Airport tunnel. The signal after the Airport Tunnel needs to be replaced with a flyover to avoid the traffic jam caused.

I think that this brifge will make it really easy for people driving from Deira to Bur Dubai, but it will not be of much help to others who are driving towards Sharjah.

I have used this bridge for the last 15 days and - as a result - I reach my office on time.

Even though the 13 lanes are going to open, there won't be much of a difference in easing up the present traffic snarl because the six lanes will then have to merge into the three-lane airport tunnel. This will make the traffic congestion ever worse.
