Black points 'will help cut down fatal accidents'

Dubai: Chief of Dubai Police said implementing the black points system in the country will contribute actively in reducing traffic accidents and offences.

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim reviewed the black points system with officials from the Interior Ministry, Traffic Public Prosecution and Dubai Police's Traffic Department.

He said motorists who have previous black points, which Dubai Police has implemented since 1994, will not have the points removed, as they will remain in the motorist' traffic record until one year passes from the date of issuing the fine.

Officials at the meeting also discussed various issues related to the black points system, such as the total number of points, which is 24 points, the mechanisms of adding on the spot and absentia fines in the electronic traffic system and the punishments of committing dangerous offences.

The traffic system has made the punishments against the youth and motorists with temporary driving licences stricter than other motorists.

Campaign: Safety in seatbelt

Dubai Police's Traffic Department continued the awareness campaign "safety in seatbelt" by visiting a kindergarten and distributing children seatbelts among parents.

The campaign aims at spreading awareness among pupils and parents on the importance of wearing seatbelts.

Lieutenant Suha Ebrahim, head of traffic awareness section, said creating traffic culture requires joint efforts to make it successful.
