40 new radars to be installed along Al Mafraq-Ghweifat highway in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police are to install 40 new radars along the Al Mafraq-Ghweifat highway, a senior official told Gulf News.

Major Hussain Ahmad Al Harthi, Director of the Traffic Engineering and Road Safety department at the Traffic and Patrolling Directorate of the police, said: "Within two weeks, 40 new radars will be installed along the route from Al Mafraq to Ghweifat."

The new radars are expected to reduce speeding and accidents due to it along the highway, he said.

Though 120 km/hr is the speed limit on the highways in general, radars flash motorists only after they cross 160 km/hr.

"The maximum speed limit will continue to be 160km/hr in areas where there are no ongoing constructions," said Al Harthi.

However, at areas where there are detours due to constructions the police reduces the speed to a maximum of 80 km/ hr or 100 km/ hr, based on the nature of the detour, he said.

For instance, we have implemented reduced speed limits from Sas Al Nakhl to Shahama area along the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway, he said adding that motorists should follow the temporary signs put up by the police when they pass by these areas.

Speedsters who get tickets are now notified by an SMS within a short time by a new speeding offences system called Hazir.
