People evacuated as fire breaks out at Sharjah City Centre

Dubai: Sharjah City Centre has been closed down after a fire broke out at 12:15pm.

The fire started at the first floor of the Carrefour warehouse, leaving extensive damage.

Customers and shopkeepers were evacuated.

Jamal Al Janahi, manager of Sharjah City Centre, said no injuries were reported.

Sharjah Civil Defence rushed to shopping centre and put out the fire in two hours, said an official.

The shopping centre is expected to be reopened in the evening.

"I left the cash desk open and left the shop. The police asked everyone present to leave the place as soon as possible. There was a lot of panic," said Jauhar Raza.

Henri Changeux, Senior Vice-President GCC, Retail, MAF Hypermarkets Carrefour, said: "The Carrefour team reacted promptly and followed the necessary guidelines."

Investigations will reveal the cause of the fire.
