New parks for Mizhar, Garhoud

Residents in Al Mizhar and Al Garhoud will benefit from two new parks to be opened by Dubai Municipality in the areas by the end of next year.

To be built at a total cost of Dh9.5 million, the project comprising the two parks was opened for quotations from contractors by the civic body late last month.

"The community park in Al Mizhar is the larger of the two, covering 4.7 hectares of land. Al Garhoud park will be 1.4 hectare in size," said Abdullah Shaibani, Director of Projects Department at Dubai Municipality.

"Both will have play areas for children from all age groups, plants, along with green stretches and other facilities such as places for barbecues. The contract will be granted by next month. After that, once construction begins, we expect the parks to be opened to the public by about October next year," he said.

Meanwhile, sprawling new premises for Dubai Men's College worth Dh120 million are to be built in Al Ruwaiya within the next two years.

Dubai Municipality is currently accepting quotations from contractors and companies for the project. The decision will be issued next month.

"Once the construction work begins, we expect the facility to be completed within 18 months," Shaibani said.

"The total area of the campus is 402,000 square metres, with the built up area being 55,000 square metres. The buildings will include administrative areas, classrooms, conference centre, halls, computer laboratory, library, cafeteria and a large recreation facility that will comprise a football field, squash court, swimming pool and gym. A special section for teaching aviation has also been planned."

Shaibani said the new facility will be able to cope with the expected increase in the number of students pursuing higher education in the coming years.
