Ministry officials tour Abu Dhabi stores
Abu Dhabi: A team of officials from the Ministry of Economy's consumer protection department went on an inspection tour on Tuesday in a bid to root out unjustified price hikes ahead of Ramadan.
Heading the team was Dr Hashim Saeed Al Nuaimi, manager of the consumer protection department.
"The ministry [of Economy] will not tolerate unreasonable price hikes, particularly ahead of or during Ramadan. We are very keen on keeping prices stable", Al Nuaimi told Gulf News, adding that the authorities have beefed up inspections to prevent malpractice.
The team started off their inspection at Mina's fruit and vegetable market and then headed to Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society and the Lulu Hypermarket before winding up for the day.
"Only four shops were found to flout regulations on prices whilst the others remained committed to the prices," he said.
Optimistic
In general, we are very happy and optimistic about the results of the inspection, he added.
However, the team was not fully satisfied with the prices of certain items being sold at Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society.
"Of course, the prices are low at the cooperative societies compared to other shops. But certain items were still too high. So we have asked them to come to the ministry to discuss solutions."
Al Nuaimi also praised the Lulu Hypermarket for its 'Ramadan Basket' where 16 items were specially priced for the occasion.
There was no shortage of basic commodities in the market.
"Everything is under control. We are watching the market carefully and any attempt to manipulate prices in the market will be dealt with stringently," he said.
The inspection team will visit Carrefour on Sunday. In addition, the team will visit Dubai today to conduct similar inspections.
