Sharjah: A 28-year-old worker plunged to his death yesterday morning while providing maintenance in an elevator.

Sharjah Police confirmed that the accident took place at a residential building in the Al Shuwaiheen area of Sharjah.

The Indian worker died on the spot after falling from the eighth floor. The incident happened at around 9am.

Stringent measures

"A police patrol was immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident after we received the 999 call but it found the man was already dead. He suffered fractures to the skull and internal bleeding, which caused his death. The worker was carrying out routine work and was repairing a technical problem in the elevator of a building," said a police official.

The police official pointed out that deaths due to accidents in the workplace have increased over the past few years, and that the authorities should take stringent measures to prevent such kinds of accidents from occurring.

The victim's body was transferred to the General Department of Forensic Medicine and police are conducting further investigations into the cause of his death.
