Hamdan sponsors two Yemeni flood orphans

Abu Dhabi: Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA), has pledged to sponsor two children who lost their family in severe floods that hit Yemen in the past few days.

The orphaned children were pulled out by rescue workers after spending 38 hours trapped under the rubble of their house in the oil-rich Sah district in Southeastern Yemen. They lost 10 members of their family.

About 100 people are dead or missing in Yemen after severe floods caused by torrential rain affected large areas of the country in the past few days.

Dr Ali Bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi, RCA Board Chairman, said Shaikh Hamdan's gesture is a noble initiative that aims to alleviate the suffering of people affected by natural disasters.

"The gesture also underlines Shaikh Hamdan's support and solidarity with the children who have been psychologically traumatised after losing their family in the floods that hit many provinces recently," Al Ka'abi said.

Al Ka'abi added that Shaikh Hamdan was following with great concern the catastrophic conditions caused by the natural calamity and its consequences.

Shaikh Hamdan had earlier instructed the RCA to swiftly dispatch emergency relief supplies to flood victims in the Hadramaut region of Yemen.

His initiative came in line with the directives of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan who ordered an emergency relief supply be dispatched to the flood victims.

Efforts stepped up

Al Ka'abi said the RCA has stepped up its humanitarian programmes and relief operations in the flood-affected areas, and is making every possible effort to reduce the burden of the affected people and improve their humanitarian conditions.
