Abu Dhabi: Authorities in the capital are all set to kick off this year's Civil Defence Day celebrations, from today.

Under the theme 'Civil Defence and safety of people with Special Needs', an exhibition, a two-day seminar and a marathon have been organised, officials said at a press conference yesterday.

The celebrations are being held under the patronage of Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior.

Colonel Abdullah Hassan Gareeb, Acting Director of the Civil Defence Department in Abu Dhabi and head of the organising committee for the event, said: "It is important that we communicate with the public to increase their awareness on civil defence related issues.

Awareness is key to improving preparedness for prevention as well as for self-protection during testing times."

This year's event will focus on those with special needs and their safety. An educative exhibition displaying the latest techniques and vehicles used by the department will start this morning at the Intercontinental Hotel.

A two-day seminar that starts tomorrow will discuss a wide range of topics from prevention and safety to challenges faced by the officials. The celebrations will conclude with a marathon for all members of the public on Thursday along the Corniche.
