Experts gather to share recycling strategies

Dubai: The Recycling Middle East 2008 conference opened at Al Murooj Rotana Hotel and Suites in Dubai on Wednesday.

The business forum, launched by Hussain Nasser Lootah, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, runs until this evening.

Prominent industry experts are gathering to share their experiences and knowledge on the latest inclinations and technology in global recycling, as well as current environmental practices in the Middle East.

International Conference Director Tony Chan said: "The quantity of general waste generated from Dubai in 2007 was more than 3.5 million tonnes, and this figure is expected to rise over the years. As such we are pleased that Engineer Abdullah Rafia addressed this issue and shared how the city plans to reduce general waste in the emirate."

Abdullah Rafia spoke about various measures undertaken by Dubai Municipality relating to the environment and recycling waste produce. Among the initiatives already in place is the formation of the Emirates Green Building Council, which will lead to more eco-friendly buildings and offices in the near future.

The conference, supported by the Paper Industry Research Association and the Paper Industry Technical Association, covered a variety of topics on global and Middle East recycling strategies.
