Dubai: A Dh100-million World Memon University (WMU) is set to be built in the UAE, the World Memon Organisation (WMO) announced on Sunday.

Construction on the WMU, which aims to accommodate 5,000 students, will commence in 2010 and be operational by 2013.

The WMO, a humanitarian group that assists the poor and underprivileged across the globe, made the announcement at its seventh annual general meeting in Dubai.

Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, inaugurated the three-day event themed "WMO Vision 2008, Dubai" where the organisation is reviewing its future projects. WMO President Haji Abdul Razzaq Yaqoob said: "As one of the most rapidly growing economies in the region and home to a strong Memon community, we have decided to hold WMO Vision 2008, Dubai."

WMU will offer full academic programmes in accountancy, agriculture, engineering, biological sciences, computer sciences, costume fashion technology, home science, management, mass media and healthcare.

The university would either be located in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah or Abu Dhabi and was currently conducting feasibility studies.
