Education body to fund peace scholarships

Abu Dhabi Ten full scholarships will be funded by the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) to invest in future leaders who will promote peace, it was announced yesterday at a signing ceremony between Adec and United World Colleges (UWC).

Ten qualified students will receive scholarships to pursue a two-year International Baccalaureate diploma at one of the 13 UWC campuses around the world.

By partnering with UWC, Adec will contribute alongside with this institution to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. UWC is the only non-profit global educational movement that brings together students from all over the world, selected on personal merit, irrespective of race, religion, politics and the ability to pay, with the explicit aim of fostering peace and international understanding, according to its website.

UWC has 13 colleges and schools, over 120 national committees, and members all over the world. It is currently considering opening a school in the capital.

"Our students will act as ambassadors for Abu Dhabi as they develop a lifelong network with future leaders across the globe," said Dr Mugheer Al Khaili, Director of Adec.
