Dubai: Dubai Municipality inspectors in May nabbed 288 people, including street vendors, beggars and illegal car washers, from the city roads.

The sweep against law-breakers also resulted in the seizure of several low-quality goods, pirated CDs and food items.

Civic inspectors conduct daily spot checks to prevent street vending, begging and car washing in public places by individuals in violation of a ruling by the Ministry of Labour.

In May 2008, they caught a total of 288 people, including 191 street vendors, 45 beggars, 25 car washers and 27 illegal butchers and fish cleaners.

A total of 2,158 counterfeit products, including ready-made garments, perfumes, cameras and watches that were fake international brands were confiscated. Also, some 3,483 DVDs with pirated films and 53 pornographic movies, 100 foodstuff items, including boxes of fruits and vegetables, were seized last month.
