Two convicts seek to clear their names in extortion case

Dubai: Two Indian workers, currently serving one year sentences, are seeking to clear their criminal record before an appeal court.

The two men were convicted for extortion and threatening to kill a merchant.

The convicts, a 31-year-old clerk and a 30-year-old office boy, have pleaded not guilty and are seeking innocence in the appeal they lodged before the Dubai Appeals Court.

Records said the convicts both verbally and in writing threatened to kill either the merchant or a member of his family if he didn't pay them Dh63,700.

Police investigations revealed the clerk, M.A., and the office boy, K.M., made the threats, calling and sending the victim a handwritten letter.

The pair is scheduled to appear before the Dubai Appeals Court next week. When they appeared before the Court of First Instance they denied extortion and threatening to kill the 42-year-old merchant.

Messenger

The victim claimed the saga began during the summer when one of his employees handed him the written letter. "A messenger came to my company and delivered the letter to my employee...it contained threat phrases and read that I should pay Dh63,700 or I or someone from my relatives will be killed."

He added that he also received telephone death threats from different landline numbers.

Surveillance camera footage showed the office boy delivering the envelope was confiscated by the police.
