Dubai: A watchman, who locked a schoolboy inside the school for hours, has been sentenced to three years in prison.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the 30-year-old Bangladeshi watchman in absentia after he failed to appear in court although he had been granted bail.

He will be deported after serving his jail term (once he is arrested).

According to records, the accused, M.H., pulled the 12-year-old Emirati schoolboy into a room and locked him up for hours for reasons unknown. The boy was later freed.

The victim E.S.'s brother and friends attracted the attention of a passerby who helped free the boy.

The watchman claimed E.S. had gone inside the school to look for pigeons. E.S. denied the allegation.

M.S. can contest the verdict and the court can decide on a retrial.
