Abu Dhabi : A man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing heavy vehicles, police said.

The accused, a 40-year-old Bangladeshi man identified only as A.S., stole several vehicles in broad daylight, according to the officials.

The vehicles ranged from trucks to water tankers and buses. He allegedly sold them to a scrap dealer for a paltry sum. The scrap dealer would then dismantle the vehicles and sell its parts.

Towed away

In the latest incidents A.S. allegedly stole a bus from the Al Ain Industrial Area by towing it away. The stolen bus belonged to Mohammad Salam, a 52-year-old Pakistani.

After receiving several reports of similar incidents earlier this month, an investigation team was formed under the instructions of Colonel Dr Saif Bu Dhafira, acting director of Al Ain Police.

The team, headed by Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Suhail Al Rashidi, head of the criminal investigation department, zeroed in on the culprit by analysing his modus operandi.

The vehicles were taken to the Sharjah Industrial Area before being sold to the scrap dealer. The dealer, a Bangladeshi identified as M.K, is also in custody.
