Dubai: A man was sentenced to three years in jail for attempting to kill his ex-girlfriend after she rejected his marriage proposal.

The Dubai Court of First Instance yesterday convicted 32-year-old Indian, J.K., of premeditatedly attempting to murder 40-year-old Sri Lankan, N.B., by stabbing her three times with a kitchen knife.

Prosecution records said J.K. consumed pesticide in a suicide bid before he attempted to kill N.B. .

"The accused will be deported after serving his jail term," said Presiding Judge Al Saeed Mohammad Barghout upon pronouncing the judgment.

Not-guilty plea

Earlier, pleading not guilty, the defendant had said: "I did not stab her or try to kill her…"

An Emirati policeman said J.K. confessed N.B. broke up with him and refused to marry him although he converted to Islam for that purpose.

"The murder attempt happened at the doorstep of a flat in Al Nahda where N.B. lived with his relatives," the policeman claimed.

"J.K. was handcuffed and seated on the floor when I arrived. Paramedics told me he was not drunk. J.K. admitted he decided to poison himself after killing his ex-girlfriend.

"He said he put some pesticide in his juice and hid the knife in his laptop bag. When N.B. told him she had lost interest in him he drank the poison and stabbed her."

In her testimony, N.B. said: "He stabbed me first in my belly and cried ‘I will kill you'. He stabbed me again. I tried to push him away… but he stabbed my arm. Then I cried for help and fell down to the floor. Neighbours came and pulled J.K. away from me. I rushed to hospital."

The Sri Lankan woman said the defendant stabbed her because she broke up with him seven months prior to the incident.

Death threats

She alleged that he used to meet her at different places and threaten to kill her if she didn't resume their relationship.

"He constantly threatened to kill me and commit suicide because I refused to marry him. He once spotted me in the hypermarket under our building and told me ‘I will not keep you alive'," claimed the woman.

Records said the defendant told the policeman after his arrest ‘why should I be poisoned and she remain alive'.

The primary judgment remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
