Gang's end 'will be in Dubai'

Dubai: Robbers who looted a jewellery store in Wafi City on Sunday night have carried out more than 100 operations in Europe, the Chief of Dubai Police said yesterday.

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim said the robbers will not escape the long arm of the law.

Highlighting the unified efforts of the security agencies to arrest the "highly-skilled and organised" gang, he said the gang started their criminal activities in 2000 and became active between 2005 and 2006.

In a daring robbery, the gang rammed into the Graff jewellery store in two cars and made off with diamonds worth more than Dh50 million on April 15.

Safest destination

"The gang carried out 132 successful operations in Europe, but its end will be in Dubai. The UAE generally and Dubai specifically will remain the safest destination in the world," Lieutenant General Dahi said.

His remarks came during the closing ceremony of the second training workshop for police patrols.

Lieutenant General Dahi said Dubai is one of the most modern and economically advanced cities, and this calls for unified efforts, especially by security agencies, to provide a secure environment for investment.

Importance of training highlighted

Lieutenant General Dahi, during the training workshop, pointed out the importance of physical and mental wellbeing and preparedness of police patrols so as to face any emergency, stop law offenders and help the people who are committed to the law.

He praised the workshop's 32 graduates who underwent a tough training.

The training included dealing with suspicious elements, physical and mental training, response to issues and flexibility in dealing with incidents that require psychological preparation.

The training also included, search and arrest skills, methods of following-up criminals and raiding places, driving cars and motorbikes and using them in stopping, controlling and dealing with fires and saving stranded people.
