Four workers jailed for stealing from Dubai hypermarket
Dubai: Four Tunisians have been jailed for stealing Dh2,509 worth of goods from a hypermarket in the Mall of the Emirates. The theft was foiled by a Nepalese security guard, who spotted them on a surveillance camera.
The Dubai Court of First Instance found the four accused guity of theft and sentenced each of them to six months in prison. All the accused, who pleaded guilty, will be deported after serving their jail terms.
According to records, at around 7.30pm, the security guard witnessed the four accused smuggling the goods out through the cash counter without paying.
The Public Prosecution charged 34-year-old worker, L.B., 23-year-old vendor, H.B., 26-year-old cashier, W.F. and 26-year-old cashier, S.S., with stealing.
The 37-year-old security guard K.P., testified: "I spotted two of the workers smuggling out goods with the assistance of one of the cashiers& the cashier was registering the goods using a special device, which read the pricing barcodes, without keying in the price on the cash register.
"I focused the surveillance camera on them and discovered that they were stealing. They stole around Dh2,509 worth of goods, which included cosmetics, clothes, food and electronics."
The accused confessed to their charges when they were questioned by the Police and Public Prosecution.
