Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police will soon start enrolling expatriate organisations for community policing, a senior official told Gulf News on Tuesday.

"We have completed the preparations to enrol expatriate organisations with the proposed Crime Prevention Council announced by Lt General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior, in December 2007 as part of Golden Jubilee celebrations of Abu Dhabi Police," said Major General Nasser Salem Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Minister of Interior's office.

He spoke to Gulf News on the sidelines of a two day symposium on "the role of security in consolidating the national identity" organised by the Centre of Research and Security Studies at Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters.

The event was held under the patronage of Lt General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior. Senior officials, academicians and experts are attending the symposium which ends today.

Al Nuaimi said the existing community policing and the proposed 'Crime Prevention Council' are pioneering steps in Arab world. "The participation of the residents is very crucial in preventing the crimes. If the residents can inform the police about the suspicious or criminal activities, timely action can be taken," said the official.

"Large numbers of Abu Dhabi residents are doing the same and we give them rewards regularly. We also want the feedback from the public about the performance of the Police," said Al Nuaimi.

Regarding the role of police in preserving national identity, he said Abu Dhabi Police will make aware of the Emiratis about national identity. "We will request expatriates to respect the local culture," he said

In his paper on 'National Identity and Abu Dhabi Police Strategy' in activating community participation, presented at the symposium, he said community's involvement in policing is very crucial for consolidating the national identity.

This is a very good idea. Prior to moving to Dubai I was a Special Police Constable with Grampian Police in Aberdeen. We were trained in all aspects of Community Policing, whereby we would work in an area and get to know the residents and build relationships. The relationships we made were also our eyes and ears, where we would receive information on what was happening and who was doing what. Therefore, the community being involved can reduce crime. I would support this 100 per cent. At the end of the day things that happen in the community affects everyone so we should all do our share to protect it.

This move will contribute largely to a more positive social society, where expatriates and Emiratis live harmoniously. People forget that it is their responsibility to care and protect their fellow residents, be it neighbours, co-workers or family.

More people should be involved in the process of combating crime. In fact, clubs formed by expatriate residents will go a long way in nabbing the criminals from time to time. It is important because sometimes people become careless when they know that they are not watched by a closely knit community. Clubs will create a sense of safety and security for people and would caution the criminals. Many major crimes have been solved with the community's involvement.

Back in East Africa where I grew up, crime rate was high. The community, with the help of the police, started "SunguSungu", which is the name given for the club to guard the community. It is a great initiative and a success so I would join if such a club was started in UAE.

I would love to serve this country as it has given me so much. I think the UAE police is an excellent team. They are very dedicated people and are always there for you. When we see such people, we too get inspired. It would be a dream come true for me to be in such a club. Whatever I am told to serve the country, I am all set to do it. Whether it is to help in reducing the crime rate within the community or to report to the police of minor crimes taking place.
