Ras Al Khaimah:  A camel gave birth to twins on Saturday — who died immediately after birth. The rare event has drawn the interest of camel breeders.

Faisal Rashid Bin Omair Al Katbi, the camel's owner, said his Arabian bred camel gave birth normally but unfortunately her twins died.

He added she had successfully given birth before four times. He never suspected that this time she was pregnant with twins.

He added the gestation period for a camel is about a year, and his camel got pregnant on January 15. He said she was in a healthy condition until her surprise delivery — and then there was no time for him to get her medical help before she gave birth.

Al Katbi, who has been breeding camels for the past 20 years, said he usually registers the necessary dates for all his camels but never noticed this one was carrying twins.

He added she could possibly have given birth to healthy twins had she been provided with medical care but none of his family had suspected she was carrying twins. He added she has been fine since the delivery.

He added he provides his camels with all possible medical treatment but to date RAK does not have a scanning machine for pregnant camels.
