Al Ain: At least three people were injured when a fire broke out at labour accommodation in the Al Nebagh district on Sunday morning.

The fire destroyed 43 portable cabins that were being used to house the workers. The cabins had been divided into 81 rooms, according to the Civil Defence.

Lieutenant Colonel Rashid Mohammad Hamarain Al Darmaki, director of Al Ain Civil Defence, said the fire started at around 12.54am when most of the workers were asleep. It was quickly brought under control by firefighters but the cabins and a bus parked in the vicinity of the accommodation were gutted. An investigation has been launched into the incident, he said.

Lt Colonel Al Darmaki said fire safety and precautionary measures must be adopted at residential cabins to prevent such incidents. Special attention must be paid to electrical and other devices that could cause a fire such as gas pipes and wiring. Smokers have also been advised to properly dispose of their cigarettes.
