Dubai: Some 200 workers marched yesterday on Shaikh Zayed road in demand of a salary increase.

Workers stopped work yesterday at 9am and took to the street in demand of a Dh450 salary increase. The workers claimed that they can no longer survive on their current salary of Dh750. "Everything is getting more expensive but we still have to survive on the same salary which we used to earn 10 to 15 years, this is not acceptable," said a worker.

Mohammad Al Murr, head of Human rights Police and member of the Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs in Dubai (PCLAD), told Gulf News that to halt work in demand of salary increase is an illegal act.

"If the workers need to change any of the conditions set by the contract they must negotiate with the company and the authorities and not stop work," said Al Murr.
