Red Cadeaux took the lead approaching final furlong in an impressive victory in Yorkshire Cup
Dubai: Ed Dunlop's globe-trotting star Red Cadeaux shook off his big-race hoodoo to record an impressive victory in the Group One Yorkshire Cup yesterday.
With Tom McLaughlin back in the saddle, the six-year-old son of Cadeaux Genereux appeared to be travelling well for most of the 2,800m trip, before he took up the running approaching the final furlong. Red Cadeaux drifted sharply across the course as he passed pace-maker Harris Tweed but he was well clear of the front runners and did not warrant a caution by the stewards.
Glen's Diamond came with a late run to grab second while Harris Tweed held on for third.
Godolphin's new French recruit Be Fabulous beat one home in the eight runner contest. "This is my biggest win on these shores. I've won the Winter Derby and I won the Curragh Cup, but it's great to win on a horse like him," McLaughlin told Racing UK.
Dunlop, who forever will be associated with the brilliant globetrotting mare Ouija Board, paid tribute to his staff at Newmarket's La Grange Stables: "It's a big day for the horse and the team. He's been a star for all of us and it's fantastic," said the soft-spoken Englishman.
"He's a gentle giant. He doesn't worry about life and he's improved phenomenally as he's got older."
Dunlop said that Red Cadeaux will return to Australia later this year to have another shot at the Melbourne Cup, a race in which he was narrowly beaten by Dunaden last November.
"Let's hope he stays in one piece. He'll race on until Royal Ascot and after than he'll have a holiday," he said.
