Meyer competing in Dubai Ladies Masters

Dubai: The forthcoming Dubai Ladies Masters will have a distinct 'local flavour' to it with Sandy Meyer joining forces with some of the world's top golfers to compete in the season-ending Ladies European Tour event at the Emirates Golf Club from December 8 to 14.

The only female golf professional in the Gulf, Meyer has been handed a sponsor's invite to feature in the euro 500,000 (Dh315,519) Ladies European Tour event which will see defending champion Sorenstam make her last competitive appearance before she 'steps away' from the game to focus on other interests.

A familiar face on the domestic circuit, Meyer is not new to the challenge ahead, having competed in the inaugural edition of the tournament, although she devotes most of her time teaching the game of golf to beginners and established players, including men.

"The invitation to play in the Dubai Ladies Masters is a great honour for me," Meyer said.

Mohammad Juma Bu Amim, vice-chairman of golf in DUBAI - the promoters and organisers of the Dubai Ladies Masters, said: "Being the only professional in this region, Sandy deserves to be part of the Dubai Ladies Masters and the invitation is our small gesture in recognition of her services to the game over the years here.

"I am sure, the fans will turn up in big numbers to cheer on Sandy and, like them, we will also be keenly following her progress in the tournament. I am confident she will do well. Our best wishes are always with her," he said.
