UAE make final after thrilling semi

Abu Dhabi: The UAE women's national team and the UAE Chess Association team are set to battle it out for the women's football title in the Armed Forces Officers Club's Ramadan Sports Festival.

The UAE Chess Association team, which is made up of Morrocan players, booked their place in the final with a victory over the Jordan national team with a 5-3 win in the tie-breaker.

Meanwhile the UAE women managed a 3-1 win over defending champions Dajla of Egypt.

The thrilling encounter between the two sides was watched by a number of VIPs and senior officials, including Lt General Mohammad Hilal Surour Al-Ka'abi, AFOC Board Chairman and Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee of the Open Sports Festival.

A crowd watched and cheered the action throughout the game.

Many thought these two sides were the best in the competition and should have faced each other in the final.

Scored twice

Katherine Menus scored twice for the UAE with Hyzar netting the other. The Egyptian team's lone goal came from Angie Atiyya late in the game.

The men's quarterfinal line-up was also decided on Tuesday night with defending champions NDC and last year's runners-up Al Rabea of Algeria both making it to the last eight.

NDC scored a 6-1 win over Suquourul Emarat but Al Rabea were equally impressive in their 3-0 win over Organza.

Others who made it to the last eight were Al Qudra Holding with a 3-1 win over Leader Sport while Fujairah International Airport booked their quarterfinal place with a 2-0 win over Al Bateen.

Hydra Properties defeated Al-Jaber Group 4-1 and Al-Nuaimi Group defeated Ankabout 3-1.

The final teams in the quarters are Air Forces, who scored a 2-0 win over Central Operations, and Capital Police also made it through after eliminating Istishariyya Group with a 5-3 scoreline.

In the open fencing competition, Jensen Lewis of Spain defeated Kuwait's Salim Abdullah 15-11 in a thrilling match.

Ayman Ala'addeen of Egypt beat Abdulla of Qatar 15-11, while Ayoub Al-Dujani of Tunisia defeated Thomas Brian of Britain 15-10.

Jiu-Jitsu

The Jiu-Jitsu championship starts on Thursday with 150 contestants from 30 countries vying for a slice of the Dhs 60,000 on offer in prize money.

The UAE will be represented by 65 contestants in the championship which has been divided into 65kgs, 74kgs, 83kgs, 92kgs and above 92kgs weight categories.

Meanwhile the draw for the second Toyota Corolla car, donated by Al-Futtain Group, will be held on Thursday.

Coupons for the draw will be distributed for free to fans inside the stadium during tonight's quarter-final matches.

Katherine Menus netted twice for the UAE national side while Hyzar grabbed the third as they set up a final with UAE Chess Association. Angie Atiyya scored a late consolation for the Egypt's Dajla.
