F1 driver Webber seriously injured in crash
Hobart: Australian Formula One driver Mark Webber has been seriously injured after being hit by a car while competing in a charity event in Tasmania.
Police said Webber broke his leg in the accident. Tasmania Police Sergeant Jon Ford said Webber was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment of "serious but non-life threatening injuries".
Webber was cycling near the town of Port Arthur when he collided with a four-wheel drive during his own charity event, the Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge.
Event organiser Geoff Donohue said Webber was in good spirits but will stay in hospital for about three days.
"They'll be inserting a rod this afternoon to hold that [leg] in position. He will have the best rehabilitation, so it's a little early," he said.
