Emirati capable of surprising all, says coach

Abu Dhabi: The UAE Wrestling and Judo Federation head coach Sergey Saveliev feels Saeed Al Qubaisi has the ability to spring a surprise in the Under-73kg Men's Lightweight category at the Beijing Olympics next month.

Saveliev, the 53-year-old Belarusian, commenting on Saeed's chances said, "At 18 he is one of the youngest competitors at the Judo championship. Yes that could go against him as his rivals will be older and better experienced. But being an unknown commodity and a fresh face can be to Saeed's advantage. He does have the ability to cause a major surprise."

The judo event of the 29th Olympic Games will be held at the University of Science and Technology Beijing Gymnasium from August 9 to 15, but Saveliev is waiting for the draw to be announced on August 7.

"Much will also depend on the draw and we hope Saeed gets a favourable draw and does not run into the top fighters in the very first round," said Saveliev, who has a very high opinion about the young Emirati's abilities.

"In every weight category there are about 50 top class fighters and Saeed is in that class. He has the same standard that most of the medal winners had before they went on to triumph. Maybe be is a bit young and a bit green. But technically he is up there," said Saveliev.

"Saeed is very serious in his training and highly focused. He is a keen learner and most importantly he believes in his ability. For a youngster he does reveal a lot of maturity and has been an eager learner," said the Belarusian.

"He also has the ability to analyse his own performance specially when he loses and this is a great quality. We are all hoping that he will be up to it on the big day," Saveliev said.
