Tight security for cricketers

Dubai: The Pakistan Cricket Board is delighted with security assistance provided by the Dubai and Abu Dhabi police for the Chapal Cup one-day series between Pakistan and Australia.

Set to commence from April 22, the series is being held in UAE as Australia had refused to play in Pakistan due to security concerns.

"We are greatly indebted to Dubai and Abu Dhabi police for the unprecedented security arrangements that have been provided for the teams as well as the match officials and it will help everyone enjoy cricket," remarked Zakir Khan, the Director Cricket Operations of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The PCB, who are the hosts of the series are keen to ensure that no security lapses occur during this series. The terror attacks in Lahore on the Sri Lankan team on March 3 had tarnished the image of Pakistan being a safe cricket venue and even resulted in Pakistan losing the rights to co-host the 2011 World Cup.

The Dubai Sports City's new cricket stadium has excellent facilities for security officials to not only have an overview of the spectators but also to make announcement to the public. Abu Dhabi cricket officials too are assisting the PCB in ensuring that the best of security is provided during the matches.

Khan had discussions with not only the Dubai and Abu Dhabi cricket stadium officials but also with the Cricket Australia officials.

Australian coach Tim Nielsen after observing the security for the team said: "Soon after our arrival here we had a good chat with the security guys who took us through the expectations of the group and how we should carry ourselves around."

Khan revealed that Major General Mohammad Eid Al Mansouri, director of protective security department and head of committee in Dubai Police, will be heading the security team.

A 14-man Australian squad arrived here early Sunday.
