Girls' inter-school cricket off to an exciting start

Dubai: The inter schools girls cricket tournament for Under-17 girls, organised by Maxtalent got off to an exciting start.

Combined Institute defeated Our Own English High School from Al Ain by six wicket but with only one ball to spare.

Cheered by parents and players Combined Institute survived the scare from Our Own school, playing for the first time in a tournament.

Combined scored 77 runs in the allotted 10 overs with Jerry top scoring with 27 Combined lost four wickets but Monique (14) and Malitha Thirumalai (13) withstood the pressure and guided the team to the target.

"We have staged this event to attract more girls into the game and we are delighted with the response," said Sudhakar Shetty, the chief organiser.

Sheila Razdan, the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Administration Officer, Media & Communications, who was also the manager of the UAE women's team, gave away the girl of match award.

In the boys event, Cambridge International School beat Winchester School. Winchester scored 81 for 6 wickets in 17 overs. Syed Faizan top scored with 26 runs Cambridge School reached the target losing three wickets in 15. 3 overs. Aditya Mavuru (25) and Arhan Anand (24)were the main scorers. Faizan who also took two wicket won the Marmum man of the match award.

In another match, New Indian School Umm Al Quwain defeated Al Taawan Private School Abu Dhabi.

Indian school scored 124 for 4 in 17 overs and restricted Al Taawan to 69 for 9.
