Dubai: Star West Indian batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul won the prestigious Cricketer of the Year award at a colourful ICC Awards ceremony held on Wednesday at the Westin Hotel.

Chanderpaul, who is presently playing county cricket in England was not available to receive the award.

Sri Lanka's Ajanta Mendis won the award for the Emerging Player of the Year Award. In just three Tests, the 23-year-old spinning sensation has taken 26 wickets at an average of 18.38.

Mendis beat England's up-and-coming Stuart Broad, South African fast bowler Morne Morkel and the emerging talent Ishant Sharma from India.

Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardena presented the award to Mendis.

“I am delighted to win the award. It is an honour to play for Sri Lanka and I hope to continue playing for my country for a long time to come,'' he said.

South Africa's Dale Steyn beat strong contenders like Mahela Jayawardene, Jacques Kallis, Shivnarine Chanderpaul to win the Test Player of the Year award.

Indian One-day team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni currently ranked World No.1 in ODI ranking expectedly won the One-day Player of the Year award.

Australia's Simon Taufel won the Umpire of the Year award for the fifth consecutive time while Twenty20 performance of the year award went to Yuvraj Singh.

The Associate Player of the Year award went to Netherlands allrounder Ryan ten Doeschate. He was also not present to receive the award as he is playing county cricket in England.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka cricket team was named as the recipients of the Spirit of Cricket Award.

The LG ICC Awards 2008 – presented in association with FICA – are based on the 12 months performance between August 9 August 2007 and August 12 August 2008.

The Awards ceremony is now in its fifth year and this is the first time it has been staged in Dubai, the home of the International Cricket Council.

Previous ceremonies were held in London (2004), Sydney (2005), Mumbai (2006) and Johannesburg (2007).

The LG ICC Awards selection panel comprised Clive Lloyd (chairman) Shaun Pollock, Sidath Wettimuny, Greg Chappell and Athar Ali Khan.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain hosted the the awards night which was attended by several top international cricketing personalities.
