AUS and Bits Pilani dominate GMU event

Dubai: American University of Sharjah (AUS) and Bits Pilani, Dubai were among the impressive winners at the end of the 11th Annual Sports Festival 2012 hosted by the Gulf Medical University Ajman, last week.

The swimmers from AUS were a notch better than the rest picking up the gold and silver medals in the boy's 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and the 50m butterfly. They also won the boy's squash and tennis gold medals leaving the runners-up spots for the University of Wollongong, Dubai and Gulf Medical University respectively.

The AUS boy's teams were also crowned champions in the football and basketball tournaments, leaving the runners-up titles for Gulf Medical University and Bits Pilani, respectively.

The teams from Bits Pilani too had a good haul of titles, winning the girls throwball, boys tennis doubles, boys table tennis and girls and boys badminton and the runners-up in the girls table tennis at the end of the week-long competition.

In the schools' competition, it was Millennium School, Dubai winning the girls and boys basketball titles leaving Dubai Scholars as runners-up in both events. The boys football trophy went to Al Sadiq School, Dubai, after they beat Millennium School, Dubai in the final.

As many as 25 universities and four high schools from the UAE participated in this annual week-long sports festival that was held to involve students in sports activities.
