UAE’s efforts to preserve environment exemplary

The authorities in charge of tackling environmental issues in the UAE have not been listless despite receiving an acknowledgment from the World Wildlife Fund in 2010, of being number one in the world in terms of having the biggest ecological footprint. Proactivity has been their hallmark and untiring efforts ensure that plans are implemented and efforts are being made to tackle several initiatives that address major ecological issues in the country. The race is now on to reduce individual footprint further and the cut-off has been set for 2030 where, among other projects, carbon emission is set to be reduced by as much as 40 per cent.

The benefits attained through a policy of smart growth will address environmental issues. Development, guided by smart growth principles, can minimise pollution, encourage brown fields clean-up and reuse and preserve natural land. The results are tangible and the benefits are far reaching. The UAE is constantly developing. Progress can, however, have adverse effects on our surroundings. Awareness is the key, while positive thought and action bring rewards.
