Parents and schools can educate children about the importance of a healthy lifestyle

There is a serious health problem in the UAE that is silently affecting thousands of people. Diabetes has been rising steadily and an immediate action plan is a must. Hence, the health authorities' initiative to address the problem in the long-term is an important first step.
It is alarming that the UAE has become rated among nations with the highest number of diabetics. About one in every five people in the country have diabetes, according to health officials. This number is expected to dramatically increase with 35 per cent of the population acquiring diabetes within the next 10 years. There is also the other side of the disease — the cost entailed in providing treatment and health care to diabetics.
The Dubai Health Authority has launched a three-year campaign to fight the disease which will start in schools with the screening of children. Yet a joint effort is required if diabetes is to be contained. In addition to schools, the role of the family is also critical as parents who are aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle will have a more positive effect on their children. Fighting diabetes needs a holistic approach that should start now — before it is too late.
