A newer, smarter e-Gate system is to be introduced at Dubai International Airport, easing line ups and facilitating smoother processing of passengers through the world's fourth busiest airport. When fully implemented across all terminals, passengers with barcode-readable passports can complete their exit and entrance formalities in under 15 seconds.

The new system will be secure, ensuring that UAE border integrity will be maintained, and those passengers who use older non-biometric passports will still be processed under the current counter check. According to officials, the new system will gradually replace the current separate e-Gate card issued by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigner Affairs. The new smarter e-Gate technology will capture biometric data and use facial recognition technology to hasten the entry and exit of passengers. The technology will also free up officers who are currently tied up with manual passport checks to perform other duties to ensure the safety and integrity of UAE's borders.
