Show all crimes at Abu Ghraib
No one can ever forget the familiar and disturbing pictures showing naked hooded Iraqi prisoners forced into humiliating and degrading poses at Abu Ghraib. Or the photographs of American soldiers proudly posing next to dead bodies and nude prisoners.
Although the prison was previously used by former Iraqi president Saddam Hussain for executions and torture, it is now synonymous with the US invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq.
Two days ago, the Iraqi government announced that it was planning to renovate and reopen the prison, which has not been used since 2006. If the purpose is for the prison to be fully converted into a museum to document crimes committed by the regime of Saddam, as well as the Americans, then this is a good project. But any other use for it would be outrageous for it would belittle the crimes.
Of course the other obvious option is to demolish it completely.
