The disputed territory's attempts to embrace democracy should be encouraged
With the citizens of Kosovo having finished casting their votes in their local elections, it is vital to understand the magnitude of the event and its ramifications, given the history of the people in relation to this particular region. Elections are being held for the first time since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008. If anything, the polls are a reflection of how Kosovars are planning to build the future of their nation and the extent of their readiness and commitment towards it.
More than 1.5 million eligible voters participated in the local election for the positions of mayors and local council members. With the decision to go ahead with organising the elections, it is crucial that the global community lends support to such an endeavour. Kosovo has taken the right steps towards building a democratic process and this should be backed by all means available.
