Exemptions granted to rule must be restricted to all but most essential cases
The Ministry of Labour is considering moving forward the traditional midday break for outdoor workers, making the mandatory stoppage rule take effect from the beginning of June. With temperatures expected to hit 48 degrees Celsius this month, the ministry should make the decision sooner rather than later.
It's vital that those who are forced to toil in sweltering conditions have their health protected — and that the number of exemptions granted to the midday break rule are restricted to all but the most essential cases. Every year, there are tales of workers who are forced to labour through the day in violation of the regulations. Those companies that flout the law and ignore the health and safety of their employees need to face the stiffest penalties under the law for their actions.
Building a modern and progressive nation also means ensuring that the rights of those who toil under extreme conditions are also respected. The midday break should take effect from June 1.
