Curbing the entry of illegal workers

Every day, authorities across the UAE arrest people for living and working in the country without proper authority. These illegal workers undermine the social and economic structure of the nation, undercut planning and provide a negative and unwelcome influence within the nation. Any efforts to curb illegals from coming into the country are to be wholeheartedly endorsed.

On Tuesday, Lieutenant General Saif Abdullah Al Sha'afar, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Interior, reported that 123,000 had failed iris scans nationwide, 54,000 in Dubai alone. The high-tech system, introduced in 2003, has provided authorities with a valuable asset in cracking down on illegals. Better communication, greater integration and improved planning will further enhance the capabilities of Ministry of Interior officials.

Given the challenging economic circumstances faced by the UAE in the current global turmoil, every effort must be made and priority given to rooting out illegals who detract from those with proper papers.
