Crack the whip on reckless truckers
The recent tragic death of a two-year-old girl who was crushed under the tyres of a truck highlights once again the urgency of addressing issues relating to the problem.
This is being said given the number of such accidents over the past few months. In April alone, there were no less than four accidents involving trucks and school buses, causing unnecessary deaths and injury.
It goes without saying that heavy vehicles - whether trucks, buses or otherwise - need certain regulations governing their operations.
Not only drivers of such vehicles should be specifically trained for the job, but they should also be continuously updated and vigorously tested as well. Furthermore, accidents involving heavy vehicles should be punished with stiff penalties.
But beyond the laws, other initiatives should be introduced for all the parties involved which does not only cover drivers alone, but also families, schools and the community at large.
