In 2004, Khalid Al Shamsi and his brother, Tariq, set up designers hub. A division of Al Shamsi enterprises, designers hub is a supplier of high-end designer furniture, which has dealers throughout the Middle East. It has recently expanded its portfolio by opening a new showroom in Dubai.
What inspired you to be involved in the interior design business?
History, innovation, design-oriented pieces and, of course, passion.
Why did you feel there was a need to set up the designers hub in the UAE?
I felt there was a lack of innovative designs. I wanted to make legendary design brands available under one roof.
What is your favourite place to source furniture?
I love Italy for its originality and craftsmanship but Germany is definitely the best place for technical details.
Do you prefer sourcing design features for private homes or hotels?
For me it is interesting to see how a house becomes a home. But I do enjoy seeing how a large building transforms into a hotel primed to be a commercial success.
If you picture your ideal room, what do you imagine?
I like to change my room, using the top-notch designs that I represent and whatever excites me. But having a sofa in front of the TV is important for me.
What feature can make the most difference to a room's atmosphere in a room?
Lighting is very important. But it is also vital to pick the right colours to complement the size of the room. You should also try to choose furniture that makes a statement.
If someone is re-designing a room on a tight budget, what should be their key investment?
Firstly make the best possible use of natural resources such as sunlight. Ensure you choose a statement piece of furniture that will give you value for money and employ minimalism as the design concept.
What do you see as the key future trends in interior design?
Eco-friendly designs, minimalism and innovation.
What do you want to achieve? What are your personal hopes and dreams for the future?
I want to create awareness in Dubai for design lovers and make the best brands easily available to them. I hope in the future the best designers will come to Dubai under our umbrella. I wish to inspire and help Dubai-based designers to succeed.
