Extensive consumerism poses an imbalance in the lifestyle of man. The resultant devastating effects on the environment are increasing in leaps and bounds. This year’s theme for World Environment Day, ‘Think. Eat. Save.’, encourages people to avoid food wastage and reduce their carbon footprint. We need a green revolution urgently to fight hunger and to sustain the global population in the coming years.
The Emirates National School, Sharjah, considers its obligation to impart vital information and awareness to young minds in their formative years about the reality of the world we live in. In agreement with the theme, the school arranged various activities from KG section till Grade 12 on June 5.
The events commenced with a symposium on the focal theme presented by senior students. Students of grade 9 and 10 were given different themes for drawing, painting and poster making. Junior students prepared charts and posters on global food security. A film show was arranged for the students of primary wing on healthy eating habits and balanced diets.
The eco club of the school is productive in making the campus green and takes active participation in the ‘Clean Up the World’ campaign every year. Environmental protection, promotion and conservation are the major goals of the club. Eco club activities transformed students into eco-ambassadors. They were also provided valuable tips on saving water and electricity on campus.
The school is proud to have an eco-friendly garden with fruit bearing trees and a variety of flowering and medicinal plants. Through the garden, the students are familiarised with environmental awareness and the importance of creating a sustainable model at the micro-level. Let’s take the initiative with this World Environment Day and make sure you, your family, friends, neighbourhood and schools do things differently to become ‘Friends of Planet Earth’.
