This parking zone is located on one of the busiest streets in the Abu Shagara area of Sharjah. For a street on which driving and parking are already an ordeal, this entire parking zone is blocked by used car showroom owners with their unregistered cars.
Interestingly, there is a sign that says that it is illegal to display cars here for the purpose of selling. The showroom owners claim that they have paid to use the parking and it is reserved by them.
However, there is neither a sign nor is the road marked in any way to indicate that it is a reserved area. The entire area is becoming very congested and it would be good if the authorities took note of this situation and resolved this issue.
Not only is the parking an issue but driving in the afternoon is also very difficult.
People stop and invariably negotiate the price of the vehicles they have brought for sale or people stop wherever and whenever they feel like to ask for the price of a car parked on the side of the road.
Double parking, blocking the road, driving in the wrong direction — these are all a matter of routine and no one has checked and corrected this. Often, police cars appear on the scene but the result is temporary. The entire street remains virtually unusable, especially in the evenings.
Twelve years ago, we were told that Abu Shagara was a residential area and that these showrooms would be moved to another area designated for used cars, outside the centre of Sharjah.
It has still not happened up to now.
